Network of theories: categories, complexity, connections
An interactive force-directed graph that maps theories of consciousness, showing their category, scholarly/scientific interest, complexity, and connections with one another. "Connections" means alignment with respect to five factors: (i) metaphysical assumptions; (ii) locus or level of key driver of consciousness; (iii) methods of study; (iv) confidence in achieving discernment; and (v) implications, such as prospects for AI consciousness, meaning/purpose (if any), free will, and life after death.

This is a scatter graph that maps theories of consciousness. Each colored shape represents a theory, and related theories are connected with lines. Their positions on the x-axis represent their Order of Magnitude (e.g., quantum level, cellular level, neuronal level, neural networks, whole brain, whole body, extended mind, universe). Positions on the y-axis represent their level on a Materialism-Idealism scale. Colors represent the categories to which the theories belong. The sizes of the shapes represent scholarly interest, the number of Google Scholar hits. The number of edges of a shape represents the theoryβs complexity. Right-click to get a better sense of their connections. Left-click to see additional information in the left panel or use the link that appears when you hover over them to go to the related page on this website. Use the buttons on the top left to filter the theories. Note: Some scoring is more obvious; some, more arbitrary. Reader feedback/corrections are welcome.

Compares the rankings of theories of consciousness in Google search hits vs Google Scholar search hits, as a rough indicator of discrepancies between public and scholarly/scientific interest. Click the theory to Identify It.

A scatter-plot graph that maps Materialism theories of consciousness, showing their subcategory (of Materialism), order of magnitude, degree brain matters, scholarly/scientific interest, complexity, and connections among them
